Panda Express is celebrating the Lunar New Year with a heartwarming and humorous new commercial.

Titled “The Invitation,” the 2.5-minute film captures the charm and complexity of introducing someone new to cultural traditions.

The story follows an American man attending his girlfriend’s family Lunar New Year celebration for the first time. When his partner steps away to help her mother in the kitchen, two of her aunts seize the opportunity to interrogate him with lots of personal questions. They inquire about his living situation, education, student loans, relationship with his mother, and more.

Despite the pressure, the man handles their interrogation with humor, honesty, and charm, leaving a favorable impression on the two ladies. He also surprises them by showcasing his understanding of Lunar New Year traditions. When he casually mentions seeing them gambling in the basement, one aunt dramatically exclaims, “You saw nothing!” He quickly replies with a cheeky, “I didn’t see anything!”.

At this point, one aunt stops the questioning and expresses her admiration for the man, to her sister, in their native tongue: “I think I like him.” To their astonishment, he responds fluently in their language: “I think I like you too,” leaving them both deeply impressed.

When his girlfriend returns and asks if they’re giving him a hard time, the aunts deny it, affectionately declaring that he’s “practically family.” He agrees and continue the conversation, seated at the table.

The commercial concludes with the onscreen lines: “From our family to yours, Happy Lunar New Year.”
